Hi Sheila and all,
We have similar dog behavior issues and have found that always keeping him on a very short leash and getting a good harness (It took three tries, but finally settled on the escape artist harness by free spirit outfitter at gearfordogs.com) We continue to try and socialize him although he is 2 ½ yrs old we believe consistent discipline and encouraging submissive will bring him around. We got him from my daughter who could not give him the time or discipline he needed. He was left alone during the day with an ill behaved chi for his first year and has extreme anxiety issues with people coming and going out the front door and the doorbell. Since he has been with us he has toned down a couple of notches, but has far to go LOL. Marsha, Thanks for commenting. I am actually the third home Max has had, and he's lived with me the majority of his life. He was born to a Chi who belonged to a coworker of my sister-in-law's. My brother thought it would be great to get my (then) 2 year-old nephew a puppy! (Yet another brilliant idea of my brother's... but don't get me started on him.) Not only was my nephew too young for a dog, but the apartment complex where they lived did not allow pets. Max lasted maybe three months before they found out my brother had him and he was told to move or get rid of the dog. In that time, I had seen Max (usually being toted unmercifully by my nephew while my brother and sis-in-law laughed about it) and I thought he was a cute little dog in need of a nice home. I would certainly treat him better! So I told my brother I'd take the dog.
