I would venture a bet that at least half the show dogs came from mommas over 6 pounds. Can you get a bigger chi? Yes, of course, but then again you can get a bigger chi from two smaller parents as well. This is why you don't just take two dogs and start breeding them. A good breeder knows their lines and knows which chis can be bred together to produce quality pups and which two should not be bred together. Can you get unexpected throwbacks? absolutely, there is never any quantee....you can get that same unexpected throwback with two smaller chis. Let me give an example....years ago, when I hadn't been breeding long, I got two chis for breeding. I did not know muich about their lines. I saw them and I saw their parents. The female was 5 pounds and the male was 4....both sets of their parents were in about the same range. I bred the two together one time.....one pup topped out at 6 and a half pounds and one topped out at 6. Much bigger than parents or grandparents.
On the other hand, I have Cayenne now, who is 6 pounds.....maybe a few oz over. I bred her to Porky, who is 4 pounds.....I know the lines of Cayenne very good since I whelped her as well....she was just one of the bigger ones....but anyhow, she had 7 pups. They are only 3 months old now, but only one of them is gonna reach 6 pounds...the others are all gonna be smaller. It is all a matter of knowing your lines, knowing who to breed to who, ect. But again, it is a very common practice to use larger females. None of us are willing to risk the lives of our momma's.
