Hello:

I believe we are talking about Interceptor or Heartgaurd that prevents heart
worms. Yes, you need to have your pets tested before giving the meds. If the
pet
is positive for heartworm, it is a different treatment to get rid of the worms.

If the pet is negative for heartworm, then the vet can put your pet on a
medication such as Interceptor or Heartgaurd.

As if your pets needs heart worm meds, it will depend on where you live. I
know
in Colorado, we have a very low rate of heartworm and most reported cases turn
out to be false positive. But, I have read that there is a increase of
positive
reported cases of heart worm in Colorado. I have talked to different vets and
it
is 50/50 if we should give pets heartworm meds in Colorado. But all say if you
do travel with the pets it is recommended. I do have all four of my Chi's in
Heartgaurd, I am having no issues. My daughter does not have her Chi on any
heartworm meds.

You never give a dog heart worm medication unless they have been tested and it
is positive. It is a very toxix poison. That was the craziest think I have ever
heard of and just think if you did not research it - you could of killed your
baby all on the advice of the Vet.
