Watch him closely, learn his schedule for going to the pottie, then take him out every how many times a day he usually goes. For most dogs its when they wake up, after they eat, and before they go to bed. For puppies its more often. If you're not at home all the time, also train him to use a pee pad or litter box. I used a litter box to train Emiliano when he was 8 weeks old. At 2 yrs old, he uses it only when the weather is too bad to go outside. Buy a litter box that has a scope opening in the front (easier for them to get in and out), get a newspaper, sop up some of his urine or put a light smear of his poop onto it, line the litter box with the newspaper, put the box in the location where he usually goes (clean the floor real good with a deodorizer to remove the odor, before putting down the box).
