Rubbing their nose in it does nothing but teach them to be more afraid. Please don't do this anymore!

He is about 1-yr old. Well,our friend was having a hard time potty training him,so are we. We have rubbed his nose in it,and tried everything....does anyone have ideas on how to break him of this?
