One thing I will add though is that neither shelter we adopted our Chi's from 
told me that I needed to go online to the company that their chip was 
registered with(AVID or 24 petwatch, I believe) within a year and pay a yearly 
or lifetime fee to maintain the info on their chips.  I guess if you don't do 
that the info for the chip reverts back to the shelter/vet that did the 
chipping.  That is very important info not to have told me!!!
