Oh…so you have your manuscript ‘parked’ on Amazon and as they sell copies they
just print them at that time?

Sounds like a win-win situation for you. The funny thing about publishers is
that they do put some time and effort into getting the book to print, but if
your book is in print for 20 years and you sell a million copies a year, after
the first print issue the publisher is making tons of money for doing nothing
much more than ordering reprints. The royalty rates are really quite low…and I
think that many authors don’t see that the amount of profit off of subsequent
printings have no or little overhead for the publisher. From that point they
sell the books, they pay you your royalty percentage probably every 6 months or
a year, and you are the one that really did all the hard work and you are the
one that wrote the book.

If this is your first book, this is a good start. If you see that going this
route works out, go for it. If you feel that the book is so well received that
you/bookstores want to stock it, then you may need a consultant to help, but
unless there are a lot of sequels, the Createspace probably is the best deal.

Good luck! I am very happy and excited for you!

Actually, Createspace (also run by Amazon) is Print on Demand, so there’s
virtually no up front financial outlay from me to get print copies made.

That’s the direction I’m looking, after I find out how well it’s received in
ebook form.

But ya, getting rid of the middleman as much as possible is my goal.

This kind of stuff scares the crap out of brick and mortar publishing houses
and the agents who are no longer necessary to getting your foot in the door in
the first place. Poor them.

It isn’t bad…it is actually smart. If you have the capital to get it printed
and distributed, then you are far better off because then you get the full
profits from sales. Cut out the middleman when you can!
