Welcome Jessica I am Jean from Mississippi. I have a 6 yr old white chi. She is paper trained to pee in the house, but she will only do her poop outside. When she was younger, up to about age 4 she would want to go out to poop twice a day.
Morning and night. Now I take her out only in the mornings, usually before 8 am. As far as the cold....buy a heavier coat for your baby. They can't stand the cold and they will try to hold it rather than getting cold or wet. My baby even has a red rain coat. I have a fleece lined coat for the really cold days. I have one coat that is nylon fluff lined. They love the heavier the coat the better when they go out. They need to smell to activate the bowel actions. This may take some time when they are young. As they age they learn to get it done faster so they can get back inside. LOl You need to set him to regular time to go out, it will be easier on you and him. My girl is trained to do it on command. I trained her to do her business when I tell her to do it. This way if I have to leave for the day, I know she is taken care of.
