As a baby, I started my little guy on a litter box. Then, on the days I was going to be at home, I would take him out. When outside, he learned what "go poop" meant and learned to go inside on his pad and outside when I was at home and let him out. Now, he can hold it much longer and even when I am gone most of the day, he rarely uses his pad, just waits until I get home. Yes, they are very smart and learn what you teach them to do, just be consistant.
