Allow me to really confuse Frank ;-) I performed the Meistersingers eighteen months ago as part of the Edinburgh Festival. I used a Panormo copy - not ideal, but closer than a Ramirez classical. The singers had performed the piece many times before in Bayreuth. They told me that Wagner had a machine installed at the side of the stage specially for this 'lute' part - a keyboard of sorts which played the part very loudly. A lautenclavier???
