I was reading Laura's post and I remembered something that we do that really
helps. We learned this trick when we were breeding German Shepherds and it
has worked with every bitch since. The bitches have a natural instinct to dig
and arrange their nest. If you keep a box outside the puppy pen with towels
and stuff in it, they will go inside that box.....dig like mad, and then walk
into the puppy pen and not dig at anything. I lay a 36x36 inch sheepskin over
the floor of the 36x36 pen, not attached to anything and the bitches never
rearrange it. They do, however, dig in their little box. It sounds silly, but
as long as you give them something to dig in, they will leave the puppy pen
alone. We keep our whelper helper box next to the puppy pen filled with
towels and stuff from the time the bitch is about two weeks from delivery,
and they dig in it several times a day but never inside the pen.
