Mine have no trouble getting around. I put the nest at the end of the crate
so mom can *get out* and sleep at the end without the nest if she so
chooses. Even 2-3 day old puppies will crawl out of the nest to search out
mom if they want her and she is not in the nest. I regularly find some of
them *attached* but not in the nest (this is why I have that 3 inch high
rail around the whole thing!).
The second mine show signs of walking I do put a rug or something down or
move them to another puppy pen with a rug underneath. I recently had a
litter that start getting up on its feet at 10 days and by 14 days they were
walking around, by 3 weeks they were running. I don't think starting life
on a slightly slippery surface slowed them down a bit!
As for the moms, most of the time none of mine like bedding anyhow and
neither do any of the other dogs. The only time they appreciate bedding is
when they are cold, the second they feel warm enough they push it out of the
way.
