Alice,
This is so very sad, and I alerted one of the lists of this situation not
too long ago. A Tri female Cavalier under 3 years of age was turned into a
pound by a women who said she would adopt, they turned the dog over to a
pound closer to me so she would be spayed and then the woman adopted. Their
answer was they did what was required by law, they don't call rescue unless
they can't find a home, they don't have our posters (they did have them,
both places) they can't give out the name of the adopter, etc. etc. I asked
the woman to please give my name and number to the adopter and I would help
her get into the breed club and she would learn all about her new dog, etc.
Never heard a word. Cass never had a report of a missing Tri girl, so we
assumed she was not in the breed club, but she did belong to someone and was
probably used for showing and would be bred as she was not spayed.
So someone could steal someone else's dog and turn it in, especially if the
dog was taken from one area and turned into the stealer's local area (as
that is where they would let someone adopt from their local area) and
everything would be legal. Really scary.
