What is your definition of "support"?
Isn't the AKC supporting puppy mills/mass commercial breeding when it allows these
breeders to even register AKC?
Is it not "support" when you have AKC reps in attendance at puppy mill auctions, not
only checking microchips and tattoos, but also encouraging buyers - millers and others
- to purchase the dogs on the block?
Is it not "support" when the AKC allows pet shops to market puppies as being "AKC
registered"?
Is it not "support" when the AKC chooses to ignore the condition of the puppy mill
dogs they see - at auction, in pet shops, and in the breeder's kennel?
It is so easy to put a "policy" on the website decrying the commercial breeding
business. "We oppose random, large scale breeding of dogs solely for commercial
purposes." Really?? How MUCH do you oppose it? Apparently, the AKC doesn't oppose
it to the point of not accepting registrations from puppy millers. A written policy
of opposition means nothing when the agency's continuing action is to allow puppy
millers to register their dogs.
I continue to hear folks say that the AKC is only a registering body, not designed to
enforce responsible dog breeding. In fact, the AKC's own "policy" makes the Federal
Welfare Act and state and local regulations the responsible parties, calling the
government's enforcement of the laws, the "solution" to the problem. There will be NO
solution to the problem until every entity involved decides to take a strong
stand against mass commercial breeding, and this must include the AKC. The AKC is a
private registry. WHY must they register all dogs? Can't they define "eligible" as
NOT including puppy mill dogs? If they are so strongly behind their own policies,
then I want to see them take definitive action. The time is LONG past for the AKC to
step up to the plate
completely, and take on some of the responsibility for enforcement instead of hiding
behind a cloak of "registry only" arguments.
As for the grand gala that was scheduled for Sept. 22 with The Hunte Corporation, the
AKC President and Vice President WERE scheduled to appear. Many ads in newspapers
throughout southern Missouri confirm this, as would the AKC. But, thanks in large
part to a mass campaign waged by "us PETA types" who strongly petitioned the AKC to
stay away, the AKC powers that be decided it was not a good time to appear cozy with
The Hunte Corporation.
I do applaud the small steps the AKC has taken (DNA testing requirement, etc.) in the
most recent past. However, there is so much more that they can and should do.
I do not care whether or not I hurt the feelings of the AKC. If that makes me
uncaring, too bad. My concern belongs to the dogs. And, there is absolutely nothing
untrue or incorrect in my statement that the National AKC registry is very much a part
of the puppy mill operation. How can they not be when at least 85-90% of all purebred
dogs sold at auction and in pet shops
are AKC registered?
