Gosh, I don't know Donna. I was quoting the "PETA types" from a couple
of other e mails that were on the list. Why don't you ask the people
that first used the term?
No, AKC was not celebrating the success of that huge commercial
breeder. The U.S. Government is, as I understand it. AKC was going to
be there to tell them what their requirements are. However, there has
now been a committee formed to look into the requirements.
In addition, "puppy mill" is a term that covers many situations. To me
a puppy mill might include a person who only has one or two, or a few,
dogs, breeds them every season or so, keeps them in horrible conditions,
i.e. tied in the back yuard, whelping under a porch or in an unheated
garage, etc. Like the lady here in my county who has a couple of
Dalmatians that she breeds to get new carpet for her house, build an
addition, etc., etc. AKC will also look into those types of people if
they breed a certain number of litters in a year and make them comply.
Commercial breeders, the ones who do it for a living, have to comply
with USDA and AKC and their local authorities. Many of those people
have quit registering their dogs with AKC. Total AKC registrations have
been going down substantially for the past several years for this
reason, and they continue to decline.
My point is...everyone can trash AKC all they want (it seems to have
become a national past time), but if AKC refused tomorrow to take
another registration application from commercial breeders, all that
would mean is that AKC would no longer inspect them for any reason BUT,
there would still be commercial breeders and people would still buy
their puppies from pet shops.
SO, since AKC does inspect them and DOES help to close them down by
working with local authorities, and HAS closed many down, and does more
every year, why don't the people that leap to conclusions before they
are confused with any facts, become more supportive of what has and is
being done and the progress being made.
