Myra...
It took me a while to answer because I was frankly taken back by your
response. There is ethics in everything we do...especially when we sign our
NAME to an AGREEMENT. I help facilitate an ethic course at a medical
college and when I hear this type of answer "we make life and death
decisions" in a course...well let say they do not go pass "go". You do not
put on our "ethical's hat on when you enter the door of work and remove it
when you leave the door". If we did we would be sociopaths when we leave
that healthcare facility...a dangerous concept...
My baby sister is a RN on a steering committee at a major medical
center...she is one of two RN with that power at that center...and she has
been nurse of the year over and over again. Why... because she is ethical
in all what she does...a pain in the "____" ...now and then...but a true
change agent. I tease her that I have to throw "holy water" on her at times
to cool her down...
I have seen her "nail" a person that glosses over things...and this has been
in a grocery store...LOL I do tell her that we need "body bags"
sometimes...but I do respect her energies...misguided at times but true to
herself!
I am currently taking a post graduate level certification course in
Healthcare Policy and Research, we will be exploring ethical decisions at
the "top"...do I check my "LIFE" or "MORTAL" ethics at the door because we
are going to explore "institutional review" policies...NO Is this more
important than my everyday decisions? NO Will I sign my name to an
agreement because I know it will change someday...NO Will the south rise
again? NO Sorry off the subject...LOL I was just thinking of Scarlet
O'Hara...who must think about this tomorrow or she will go crazy...well
Rhett has left the building...
As I posted before there is always rationalization for being a "steady" in
an organization...it is safe ...you have to live with your decisions and
time tables. Take ownership for that...but by not doing this... you have
discount "the change agents" that has made these things happen that YOU are
enjoying.
Take care,
Kathy Yonkers
