I agree totally with you Kim. There is NOTHING like seeing class after
class of 10-25 dogs and bitches, half of which are high quality, month in
and month out. The PROPORTION is no different in the AKC, but the numbers
in the AKC shows are SO much smaller it just doesn't *teach* the same.
Let's say there are 200 dogs entered in a CKCSC specialty. Of those 200,
about 100 (half) are show quality. And about 20 are truly top quality
(10%). The average AKC show has 10 entries. Of these, about 5 (half) are
show quality, and ONE (10%) is top quality. New breeders who have not been
to specialties go to AKC show after show after show often seeing only 1 (or
NO) top quality dogs. When you realize that the other 9 are not of top
quality, I guarantee most inexperienced breeders will start breeding to how
the MAJORITY of them look--not the way that top quality one looks. This is
why so many are starting to show these leggy, fine boned, long heads without
cush bitches. The breeders are breeding to how the majority looks and
selling these so-so puppies to other new breeders as show quality. In my
area, half or more of the males being shown tend to be English imports or
immediate descendents of English imports--their quality tends to be
better--both because of that and because judges expect the boys to be more
masculine. But the GIRLS!! Unbelievable! A typey Cavalier girl looks
ridiculously out of place in my area. I have been accused by some judges of
breeding too short-legged of Cavaliers!
And the poor judges! They, too, tend to pick the *better* dogs of the
*average* look--especially in bitches. When numbers are so low, they simply
cannot *see* what is correct. Those same judges would do a much better job
at a CKCSC specialty simply because they would see so many and be able to
discern proper type.
I could not do my Cavaliers justice--I could not consider the welfare of my
Cavaliers of paramount importance, if I did not continuously watch and show
in such quality competition. My personal code of ethics says the welfare of
Cavaliers is of uptmost importance--it doesn't distinguish between AKC or
CKCSC Cavaliers.
