Hello All
I am in agreement with Myra and Peggy. If we "only" breed for health, we
will no longer have what makes the Cavalier, or any other breed, unique
unto itself.

I'm one of those who have been in Cavaliers only a short time, and have
been in Newfoundlands for about 10 years. (also not a very long time).
About the time I got into Newfies a breeder "out there", quite well-known
in the breed, bred only for health and hips. Type was quickly lost, as was
temperament. They got big, ugly newfies, very sound, but not good around
kids. After a time, because of wild, overactive huge dogs who bit, they
stopped selling their dogs to people with children, because they were
unstable. These were newfies...Nana personified...known to be children's
guardians. But they were healthy and sound. Now those same people have
revised their breeding to get back to type and temperament. Perhaps not
quite as sound as they really would like but at least they look and act
like newfies.

I believe there is some happy medium we can strive to achieve. Check the
breeding stock, breed carefully, spay and neuter when applicable, but keep
the breeds basically the way we hope and the standard says they should look
and behave. And hope for the best after we've done everything possible.
Only my opinion, novice that I am.
