While you all are discussing health before type, please remember the
following:

First of all, I don't know of anyone who picks their puppies other than by
type and temperament since health problems rarely show up until well after
one year of age.

Second, if you breed a 3 year old with either MVD, patellar luxation, hip
dysplasia or cataracts BECAUSE it has great type, then you are not breeding
type over health--you are in actuality excluding health. And I do pray you
are telling your pet buyers that you are doing this.

Third, a dog that develops patellar luxation or hip dysplasia, positively
has some type of structural defect (if it didn't, it wouldn't have developed
the problem!!) and if so, that structural problem WILL detract from type.
It is very hard to get a dog that exudes wonderful type, both standing and
moving, when it has hip dysplasia or patellar luxation. Some people may
want to believe it can and does happen, but using just a little bit of
common sense will tell you--it can't.

Fourth, this discussion could not have been thought of unless there are
breeders who ARE breeding dogs who supposedly exude type but have health
problems.

Think about it!!
