Laura, I don't recall anyone saying that they picked their puppies for health. My
original comment was that I do not believe that health concerns should take precedence
over type.
I hear and read posts with everyone talking about all the testing they do...I don't
seem to see those same people talking about type at all. When someone who does know
about type, e.g., JoAnn, makes a comment about type, there is no response.
People on the list say they want to breed to a dog because he is healthy and
older...I've yet to see in the same paragraph any comment about how the dog was of
outstanding type.
Your remark that the "discussion could not have been thought of unless there are
breeders who ARE breeding dogs who supposedly exude type but have health problems."
was completely out of line...the discussion comes up amongst long-time dog people,
stockmen, if you will, whenever health concerns take precedence. If you've been
around for very long, you must have heard people say "you can get a sound dog out of
the pound." That saying came about because it is true. You may not know what kind of
dog it is, but it moves beautifully...generically, but beautifully.
The same type of thinking leads to the statements made by people who are against
breeding because there are so many dogs in need of homes...their position is that
breeding showdogs results in health problems, therefore a mutt is healthier. The
fallacy of that statement is obvious.
Not all dogs exude type...and not all dogs are unhealthy. However, when all
someone has to say about a dog is that it passed all its health tests, I wonder why
that person isn't bragging about how beautiful it is. Nobody with a brain doesn't do
health tests...as far as I'm concerned, it's a given. Beauty is not a given. We have
to have both.
I think you not too subtlely tried to say that I, and anyone else who places type
first, have unhealthy dogs, and in that, you are dead wrong.
Maybe you think no one could think of this without breeding dogs who have health
problems...it occurs to me that the people who whinge the most about health problems
must certainly run into them all the time or they'd not find it so bloody important.
Peggy
