1. I agree with Linda - if you don't love them first, why do you have them?
2. Winnie - No, I do not and never will put health before type. What a question,
when I thought I'd already made that clear. Health is important...but if you
want to put health before type so your little dogs live forever, you are in the
wrong breed. Do what the anti-breeding people say and get a mutt...your chances
of it being healthy are 50-50. Putting health before type will lead to loss of
type.
Do Not Put Words In My Mouth! Yes, I test...but if the dog is ugly and/or
unsound, I frankly don't care if it lives to be 25 and still has a clear heart. I
don't want an ugly dog no matter how strong its heart is.
3. I resent Susan Cochran's post that "the US has tried breeding for type and
gotten the beautiful Cavalier that drops dead at age 7." The implication is that
we have a corner on that market, and that simply is not the case. In addition,
not all dogs who drop dead at 7 do so from heart problems--no matter what country
the dog was bred or lives in.
In other breeds, I know there are certain lines prone to particular
problems...if anyone can tell me of ANY Cavalier line anywhere where no dog has
ever died before it was 10 or no dog has ever had a heart problem, I'd like to see
them prove that. I believe there may be some lines that seem to have lots of
long-lived dogs...but there are others who have them, too. So far as I know, no
country has managed to eliminate MVD-----I mean really eliminate it. Am I wrong?
