If the girl is 63 days on the day the vet is leaving , she will probably
have her puppies before that. A large litter usually means an early
whelping. However, I would opt for a "backup" vet. It never hurts to be
prepared. If she goes into labor during the day, take her in to be checked
by whichever vet that you have available. If she goes into labor during the
night, you need to have medical help already lined up. This isn't always
possible. We have a similar problem because none of the vet clinics in our
small town will take after hours emergencies. All of these are sent to the
emergency clinic in Greenville which is 35 minutes drive from us. So far, we
haven't had to use their facilities. We do a lot of praying when we have a
night whelping.

Our last litter was Patsy's 3 boys. Her first puppy was at 11pm and I was
there to help her, but her next pup was born during a "restroom" break and I
came back to the room to find a baby all cleaned up, cord tidied, and
afterbirth being taken care of by Patsy. She looked at me as if to say,
"You're not needed. I've got everything taken care of, go to bed." She had
the next one by herself and did a lovely job. I breed for whelping instincts
such as she has--- dams who calmly and efficiently take care of business. It
sure make life easier for all involved. Besides, I feel that it is cruel to
make a female have puppies when she is a poor whelper and has a difficult
time of it. There are extenuating circumstances to that (such as valuable
health clearances or other concerns), but as a general rule, only the ones
who enjoy having babies and are good at it should be used.
All the best,
Susan Cochran
