Donna, I am going to be the descenting vote here. Our last two litters have been large. One had nine pups, one had eight. Both were sectioned. The girl with nine was a scheduled, planned event because our repro specialist felt that we had the greatest chance of keeping all the puppies with a section. Mom and babies did great and mom looks fabulous with her pups now almost 5 months old. There was one dead puppy in that litter. The second girl had 8. She delivered the first puppy very suddenly without warning, but then had no more contractions for 2 hours. By the time we got her in to the vet, two of the puppies were dead. The vet who did the section showed me that the uterine tissue was stretched to paper thinness and would have been completely unable to contract and push out those other puppies. When the litter is large, I feel that your best chance of saving the puppies is to schedule a c-section with the approval of your vet, of course. Better that than a ruptured uterus, or dead puppies. As an old, retired Labor and Delivery nurse, I can't tell you how many times a c-section saved a human baby, and I don't think of them too much differently for my dogs. Myra Savant
