Now wait a minute. This is the second post opposed to my views. You are all entitled
to your opinions just as I am to mine but please allow me to clarify.
I do not make it a habit to sell show potential puppies since I feel it is to my
advantage to keep that puppy and show it myself but I can still remember how hard it
was to find my foundation bitch and I wish I had gotten her from a breeder who would
have made herself available as a mentor to me. I would have been happy to give her a
puppy back for that alone. My daughter bought a Golden Retriever (of excellent
lineage) and had to send her back to the breeder (after doing all the health checks)
for her first breeding as this whole litter was owed back to the breeder. Now that's
what I call excessive.
When I sell a show potential puppy I charge a pet price (and that's not nearly as much
as what you get for a pet in the U.S.) so that if the dog does not mature into its
potential, they have a pet (which they are expected to neuter) and I make this quite
clear from day one in writing. If the puppy does turn out, I am more than happy to
show it for them.
No matter how carefully you screen your potential puppy owners, some have all the
right answers but they're lying. Had one like that who bred her bitch to the
neighbour's Maltese for her first litter. Yes, I took her to court and yes, I was
awarded judgement but she moves around so you can't find her. Now I want a little bit
of control until that new show/breeding owner proves herself. If he/she is willing to
study pedigreees and make suggestions for that first breeding, I am happy to go along.
Otherwise I will make the suggestions and explain why. As you said, every breeding
should be done to improve on what is already there.
