Hmmm -
Seeking judging assignments is frowned upon (to put it lightly...) in every venue that
I know except CKCSC-USA. As far as judging is concerned, some
assignments are better than others- and there are many, many judges, not just Cavalier
judges, who turn invitations to judge into mini-vacations.
There isn't a thing wrong with that.
There are also assignments that judges take that they will never take again, because
they are horrid experiences.
However...even the best of judging appointments can have horror stories involved
with them, such as having planes cancelled, or having no one show
up to meet you at the airport and not having a clue where you are supposed to
go....this is really difficult when in a foreign country. By foreign,
don't just think of English-speaking places but of countries where English is not the
first language and where natives might not speak English at all.
Being left stranded there, even if your "welcoming committee" is only late and hasn't
forgotten you entirely, can be frightening.
In the end, Dave, it is the dogs and the friends one makes over the years that
make judging worthwhile. There is not nearly the prestige that
non-judges think there is. Yes, a judge is treated in a rather special way most of
the time...but not always. And there are the weeks when that same
judge is an exhibitor like the rest of us...and treated just the same way we all treat
one another.
As for visiting friends in other countries and spending time with them after
judging assignments in those countries, I fail to see what is wrong
with that, if anything is wrong. That kind of thing expands one's horizons and, if
push comes to shove, can be and often is reciprocated when the
hosts and/or hostesses travel to other countries to judge.
Seems to me we could use some horizon expanding here on the list, no?
