True, however if you want to find a good Cocker with good temperament, your best bet would be to look to the show Cocker breeder. I do not deny that there are poor temperaments in show Cockers although I remember only one parti line that was affected this way. But that was thirty years ago and many things change in a breed in thirty years.
When someone asks me where to find a good Cocker, I tell them to research the show breeders and find one that breeds for temperament as well as looks. They are out there, but it will take some effort to find them. Also, I have to say that it is much more likely to find a bad tempered Cocker from a backyard breeder than from the show breeder. The protectiveness that is the "norm" in the U.S. will not stop a degeneration of the breed. Even with all the hype about Cavaliers and the Country Club sort of initiation into the breeder ranks, it is possible to see very poor temperament in a Cavalier. We have twice met people in the last few years whose dogs went back to some of the best show breeders, yet each had an aggressive temperament very unlike a Cavalier. There are always exceptions to every generalization.
