This is true but in my opinion the reason the backyard breeders are
responsible for messing up a breed is because in most of the more popular
breeds, only about 10-15% of the puppies are produced by show breeders, 5%
by commercial breeders and all the rest by backyard breeders--hence they
seem to do the lion's share of the messing up.  I think that generally (not
counting new fad breeds) the breeds on the lower end of popularity tend to
have a higher percentage of puppies produced by show breeders.  If only
10-15% are produced by show breeders and most show breeders are reputable
breeders who do a decent job, the percentage of poor show breeders who help
mess up a breed is very small indeed.  Certainly less than 5% as compared to
the 80-85% produced by backyard breeders who have no clue.
