It was a study on all breeds, showing--on average--who is breeding purebred
dogs. Back when I started in Cavaliers, the vast majority of the breeders
also showed their dogs. I *knew* almost every breeder in the country to
some extent.

In one month's AKC Stud Book of last year, there were 76 Cavalier litters
recorded. Of these 22 were bred by breeders who don't show. Close to half
of the 22 were bred by 2 or 3 commercial breeders that I've heard of, the
other half backyard breeders or commercial breeders I don't know about--most
of the other half were bitches from Ireland with those funny names like
Fancy's Beauty or Princess Sunshine. 54 were bred by show breeders. So it
seems the Cavalier statistics are beginning to change as well. Of all the
Cavaliers registered each month, the percentage of those bred by show
breeders is dropping. The statistics seem to say the show breeders are
doing a good job of keeping puppies from being bred by backyard breeders.
Unfortunately they seem to be buying them from brokers and pet shops and
starting to breed anyway.
