Hi Rosanne,
I have asthma and and forever grateful I am not allergic to dogs. The best
way to explain it is to say that asthma is a condition, not a reaction to a
specific item. I am allergic to "smells" more than anything. I can't be
near perfume or any cleaning products or smoke, etc. I am allergic to dust
and other things like leaf mold, etc, but those things may produce a reaction
totally unrelated to asthma. (Some sneeze, I get sinus headaches.) Asthma
is the reaction one gets when exposed to whatever they are allergic to. The
air passages close and you have trouble breathing. I could be near someone
smoking and take one breath and feel like someone put their hands around my
throat and cut off my air.
I guess that means there are no single answers. Some people are allergic to
dogs and some, like me, just to cats. There is no reason for someone with
asthma to be restricted to a dog with hair, as opposed to fur. That is only
necessary when someone is "allergic" to dogs with fur.
Phyllis
