Hi, My daughter has a futon in her dog room. We covered the mattress with a flannel backing tablecloth in case of accident. Then a fitted mattress cover, then a fitted sheet, then a nice cover...
She was babysitting a dog, and the dog accidently relieved herself on the futon... with all that protection, there was lot of washing, but no long term effect!
