Rosanne,
I have acute asthma and I chose a dog show in Portland to visit a few breeds
I thought I might consider owning. I am amazed I survived just over an hour
before I had to leave due to asthma. Depending on the dog , if his hair
touched my hand or leg I would break out with a rash and if I was in the
grooming area I got asthma. I realized I needed to get my asthma under
control before I could consider a dog.
I chose an allergy/asthma specialist who was involved with new medical
trials for treatment and went to asthma conferences to stay current with
state of the art treatment. According to new research, it is not the hair
that a person with asthma reacts to but the salava! The dog licks himself
and you come in contact with the area he has cleaned, bingo ... a reaction
occurs which triggers the asthma. Any way, it was brought to my attention I
was using outdated medicine to treat an attack when the new medicine acted
as a preventative. I have suffered from this since I was 4 years old. I have
allergies which trigger the asthma attack as well as athletic induced
asthma... a double whammy. So, I find using Zytec once a day and albuterol,
and flovent inhalers twice a day allows me to live with numerous cavaliers
and two cats without suffering any asthma! Ask them to get their asthma
under control with preventative medication then come visit for a couple of
hours to see if they react to cavalier salva. It is worth the medical
expense so they can enjoy a cavalier king charles spaniel. I hope this is
helpful.
Patricia

Subject: [CKCS-L] Dogs and asthma

>I had a call from a potential puppy owner and need a little help on asthma
questions. I am certainly not familiar with dogs "hair", or "fur", but
apparently there is a difference. She had a giant schnauzer, which
apparently has hair, and our cavaliers have fur. Her giant schnauzer
recently passed away, and she has been doing much research on a new and
smaller dog, and found the cavalier. Do any of you have asthma? Better or
worse with dogs? Cavaliers? This woman is apparently very asthmatic, and I
certainly don't want to sell her a dog that will make her ill.
>Interesting topic, and thanks in advance for any help you can give.
