I would like to make one comment -- show dogs are never born - - they are
MADE!!. A drop dead gorgeous dog in the hands of novices will go nowhere.
Show dogs have to be raised to have a show attitude -- some have it naturally
and some do not. Those that do not have that show attitude have to be cajoled
into making them think that it is their idea to have this show attitude. They
also have to be raised and fed correctly so that they are neither too fat nor
too thin. They also have to be exercised correctly so that they have muscle
tone. They also have to be trained (yes, I'm guilty of not doing so much of
this myself!!) and socialized so that they have the slight advantage over the
other exhibits. They also have to be bathed and brushed and conditioned over
the months so that when they are shown, their coats gleam. All of the above
goes into MAKING a show dog. Pro handlers, without trimming, are well able to
do all of the above and that in itself gives them the edge. So we, as owner
handlers, must do likewise to keep the condition and training on a high level
on our dogs so that we have the ability to be as good as the pro handlers.
Let's not blame them for doing their job better than owner handlers can. It's
up to the owner handlers to be better than the pro handlers -- and it can be
done. There is nothing more aggravating than seeing a beautiful dog in the
hands of novice handlers. The dog is usually not trained nor brushed and
conditioned properly.
