Hello

Here in Denver I have found it extremely difficult to find a vet that has
reasonable dental charges. I have one dog going in tomorrow for a cleaning and the
estimate is as follows:
Anethesia $90.00
Bloodwork $69.00-140.00
Antibiotics $15.00-50.00
Scaling & polish
mild $50.00
moderate $60.00
severe $70.00
Total $155.00- 350.00!

The ranges are a bit of a worry!(look at the "bloodwork!) especially with multi
dogs. I do not anticipate this being anything but a "mild" cleaning. I used to do
dentals myself when working at a clinic in NC. So, I know his teeth are not bad. I
also find it disconcerting that the vets vary so widely in their policies, for
example, one vet gives you the option of doing, or not doing, bloodwork. While others
demmand it! I think , if they explain the reasons, it should still be the owners
choice. At one vet, I asked if he could have his hips x rayed for OFA, after the
dental, while he was asleep, and this bumped the estimate up to almost $500! After I'd
quit laughing, I politely said "NO, thanks!" At the above vet, he is having his Xray
done and it will be an added $137.00. Which isn't too bad if the dental is at the
lower end of the scale (no pun intended!), but there are no guarantees, beforehand.
I have definitely noticed a BIG difference whilst being in Australia for six years.
The vet costs here are at least double the costs for the same procedures. Using the
same products (isoflurane etc). One vet had the audacity to say to me, "Well that is
one of the hazards of having too many dogs!" These dogs have been part of my family
for a long time. One is 12years old and has travelled the world with us. They are
NOT a disposable comomdity.

  Thanks for letting me vent!
