I appreciate your comments Dave, and view this as a friendly discussion. I never take anything personally about this issue. We are exchanging ideas. In a perfect world, testing of breeding animals would be mandatory. However, as Jo asked....who where for what, when?? It's a huge issue and would possible create a lot of change within breeding homes. I would love to see it mandatory.....but I would hate for either club to suddenly announce that all breeding animals must follow the recommended "protocol" for prevention of early onset MVD. It would just drive unethical people into other types of registration. What would be wonderful is if they started slowly. Patellae exam by vet, Opthamologist exams and Cardiologist exams dated within a year of breeding (preferably within six months of breeding) submitted on sire and dam with litter registration. This is something that most breeders, even those who have not tested before, would be able to do. Set time frames for other testing. Add hips after a certain time period. Work toward the 2.5 year old age of first breeding. Don't spring it as a mandatory until people have had plenty of time to get used to it, and prepare for it. Work toward full mandatory testing in five years, and full MVD protocol compiance within seven years or something to that effect. This is a plan that would work over time. I do believe in mandatory testing, and hope for it in the future. Myra
