It would be a no-brainer for me too, Dave, except that it would be something
of a task for the powers that be to come up with what constitutes "health
testing." I'm not trying to be difficult or quarrel with you, but there are
many fine points to the health testing that I have only lately begun to
appreciate. I hadn't really thought about it other than terms of health
testing. Period. However, what about the 8 year old heart clear boy with
mild dysplasia in one hip? Clearly he has a lot to offer. Perhaps he is
suffering from the normal wear and tear changes on the joint. Perhaps his
owner had never had his hips checked before but starts to look more
carefully at him as each year passes and his heart remains clear, but he
can't be cleared by OFA. What about the 4 year old bitch who has suffered
an injury to her ligaments who can no longer be cleared for patellae? She
is heart clear, hips good, eyes clear but no go on the knees. What about
the 9 year old boy who may have just been diagnosed with a stage one murmur?
It would be a real job just keeping up with the various requests from
breeders wanting to breed the 10 year dog who has a stage one murmur and
mild dysplasia in one hip. It is hard to define what is acceptable and what
is not. I practice health testing, and I believe in it. I'm just not sure
who would decide the limits and how they would be figured into the breeding
picture if "health testing" was mandatory. Myra
