Hi, Dave,
Again while I appreciate your point, there are judges who will put up
the dog who they feel is the most meritorious and correct the handler
quietly later. Personally, I think it is the kinder way to do things;
as I mentioned this particular judge made a comment to me while taking
photos. I have tried to improve on my table work since then.
None of us want to be mortified while showing (which, after all can be
a nervous-making affair in itself) and I fail to see what gain there is
to encourage a judge to be loud and rude. They can just as easily
whisper as yell. I have seen judges quietly comment to an exhibitor
(and I couldn't hear the comments) and see the exhibitor jump up to
their feet; perhaps that is preferable to the other exhibitors in that
they can extrapolate that the judge corrected the handler. (Why IS it
that we all love to SEE others who make mistakes castigated?)
In the end, the GOOD judges will put up the GOOD dogs whenever they
find them and if they are also good teachers then they will educate
quietly as they go.
If you want to "spread the word" about judges you do and don't like,
perhaps it would be a good idea to have a private email list. A few of
us do, for instance, discuss which judges are more likely not to
overlook a wholecolor and communicate that information.
However, I think this list is not the forum for discussing particular
judges, especially as here where I think there would be disagreement.
Losers rarely learn to admire the other dogs who win; too very easy to
make up reasons why the ribbon went to the other dog.
How would this one have gone if the judge had whispered to the handler
to get off his/her feet and THEN put up the dog? Would there be more
tolerance for it, because the winning dog's handler got publically
corrected?
Either the judge is judging the dogs or the handling. In my mind, you
can't have it both ways. The worst judges I've had are often those who
judge junior handling. They know exactly how the dog is to be presented
and frequently reward presentation.........and NOT breed type.
Sorry.....we'll have to agree to disagree on this.
