I bred and showed purebred Birman cats for 10 years. I sold my pet kittens so carefully, and this is my own opinion on the subject of "non-refundable" $200 deposits this woman requires of her pet buyers. Also, cash, certified check or money order.
I never once took a deposit on a kitten. Why? I wanted to be absolutely sure that the person (after they passed my inspection), *really* wanted the kitten. By not taking any deposit, there is no obligation on either side. I could change my mind if something came out about the pet home at a later date. *They* could feel free to change their mind if they were impulsive buyers. Birman kittens and Cavalier pups are so in demand that there is no worry about finding a good home by insisting on a deposit, IMHO. Also, I gladly accepted personal checks from people. Not ONCE did I ever get stuck when taking a personal check. I figured it this way: if I can trust them with my precious baby kitten, whom I raised from the moment he/she came out of her mother and loved so much, then I better be able to trust their personal checks! I never let a kitten go home the first visit; they all came back even if they lived two states away. I think these were sensible standards, besides my kitten contract. Just before I finished with breeding and showing, I would early neuter/spay my kittens too. Birman kittens do not go to their new home until 3 months of age. I waited sometimes for 4 months. Dr. Niels Pedersen (?sp) found no problems with early spay/neuter of cats. Just my 2 cents worth. I know some of you ask for deposits, and that is fine; I just wanted the freedom.
