Hi, Gerri,
Yes, I do have three retired horses on our property. One of them
probably wouldn't bother a small dog. One of them would probably have a
flight response (my arab), or might lash out with a kick. The third
HATES dogs and children and is never allowed near either. (Think of him
as you would a crotchety elder in a smoking jacket and ascot..LOL)
However, I have been in horses for forty years plus..........am
certified as an instructor and bred Welsh ponies. I have NEVER liked
dogs in my barn. In my current set up our dogs would have to escape two
different types of fencing to get up the hill to the barn and pasture.
I have seen horses kick small dogs and it is not a pretty sight. I
have seen riders unseated and hurt because of unleashed dogs. I have
seen loose neighborhood dogs form "packs" and follow riders on trails
frightening horses and causing accidents. Unless one is talking about
highly trained and supervised hounds who are meant to learn their job
around horses, I really don't like to mix dogs and horses.
So.......if someone told me that they owned a horse and wanted to take
their companian dog with them to the barn when they went riding, I
wouldn't sell them a dog.
But if they told me that their dog would stay at home and their horse
was stabled elsewhere of course I would sell them a dog. Also,
presumably (and I have teenaged boys, so perhaps this isn't a safe
assumption <G>) the child of such a person wouldn't be able to drive to
the barn with the dog.
