Hi, Lu,
Much as I hate to say this, the likelihood is that if he is allergic to
dogs, he is allergic to all dogs. In the case of cats, it is less
simple; the allergen is so different from cat to cat. (I am allergic to
cats and more allergic to some than others). But most folks who are
allergic to dogs can't tolerate any dog. If he has been hospitalized,
then he probably cannot chance a lot of contact with furry critters. I
would suggest to the mother that an allergist make recommnendations for
what, if any, pets he can have. That way you don't have to be the
"heavy" in this situation.
It isn't a matter of finding a "hypoallergenic dog" so much as it is to
know to what this child is allergic. One is allergic to whatever one
becomes sensitized in that fashion.
I wouldn't place a pup with a family who had someone with asthma due to
allergic reaction to dogs. Sadly, most allergists will probably say no
pets; though perhaps he can have fish if he dosen't react to mold.
Warm Regards,
Suze
