Fortunately I am not allergic to dogs but I do have allergies and asthma and am allergic to cats and a slew of other things. Much of my early childhood was spent in the hospital and I was constantly being medicated (which may explain things now VBG) I spent ten years getting shots to build up my immune system to tons of specific allergens and can now eat foods that I never could and have not been hospitalized since I was a kid. Immunity does build up over time and one may become immune to an allergen depending on how severe the reaction is. If this family is serious about getting a dog they need to find out how severe the allergy to dogs is and begin to take steps towards building up immunity then find out which if any breeds can be tolerated.
When I was looking for a cat that was hypoallergenic, which means to have a decreased tendency to provoke an allergic reaction (does not mean non allergenic, that doesn't exist) I found that some breeds and even individual cats can cause a reaction or not cause a reaction but this varies from person to person, breed to breed and cat to cat. Cheryl as she mentioned has no reaction to Siberian cats, I on the other hand was sucking on my inhaler within 20 minutes of visiting a Siberian breeder. Some people have no reaction to Ragdoll cats since their fur is more rabbit like. I found that I do well with Devon Rex, Cornish Rex (they have fur like a poodle puppy) and Sphynx cats (hairless). The same holds true for dogs, while one person may react one way another may react differently. Some people will do fine with a single coated breed as opposed to a double coated breed. Some people can only tolerate a certain texture of hair etc. Terrie:) Dave VanWinkle wrote: > Lu, > I have a Siberian cat which is the only true hypo allergenic cat just in > case your party can't have a Cavalier.
