The mother of this child needs to rethink. In addition to the animal dander posing a possible problem, if a person has an allergy to pollen, etc. which triggers an asthmatic reaction, it is not advisable for that person to have a pet which is in and out of the house because the allergens are brought in on the pet's feet, fur, etc.
My sister is asthmatic and had allergic reactions to dogs, cats, grass, trees, pollen, etc. when she was a child. Even if a dog licked her hand, the saliva from the dog would cause an allergic reaction and could trigger an asthmatic reaction.
