Hi list, > Much as I hate to say this, the likelihood is that if he is >allergic to >dogs, he is allergic to all dogs. In the case of cats, it is less >simple; the allergen is so different from cat to cat. (I am allergic to >cats and more allergic to some than others). But most folks who are >allergic to dogs can't tolerate any dog I'm afraid that this is not necessarily true. I'm an asthmatic and have various allergies. I am allergic to long-haired cats. I had a short haired cat for almost 10 years and had no problems with him coming and going in the house. However, I cannot go into a house with German shepherd dogs or kuvaz without having an allergy attack - runny eyes, sneezing, and sometimes wheezing. Short haired dogs don't bother me except if the fur/hair rubs the sensitive parts of my skin (inside arm, neck, face) the wrong way. Then I break out in hives where the hair poked the skin. I've been in houses with Golden Retrievers with no problems. I have had boxers and dobermans for 30 years and no problems. Also had a poodle many years ago and currently a Cavalier with no problem. I have during the last 3 months had a serious problem with asthma for the first time in 8 years - can't understand why; however, my cavalier does not elicit asthma or any other allergy symptoms. That said, if I were the parent, I would put off getting small furry pets for my child until he was older - many allergies are outgrown. Maybe a snake? Ball pythons make good pets as do some boas, according to my brother and his son. For some reason boys like snakes. :-)
