After reading your reply, I got out Smith's book. You were right that she
was quoting someone else, but your interpretation that it was about poor
markings is wrong  IMO. Both she and Pitt were talking about picking puppies
from a litter to keep for showing. She never said to not discard a pup
because of its markings in the paragraph dealing with "champions elbow" or
any paragraph in that section. She was talking about "lucky markings" which
were thought by some to be omens of future greatness. It's on page 18 in
Smith's book, if you want to read it.
