Laura,
I know first hand how right you are.  The breeder in California I spoke to
wanted $3000 for her pets and $5000 for her show prospect, 12 weeks old, and
co-owned. Free stud service for her if a male and pick of first or second
litter (her choice) and first pick of first or second litter (her choice) if
a bitch.

That was the most extreme but almost every breeder wanted co-ownership and
many wanted an excess of $2000 for a puppy.
