I hate trimming the dew claws myself, and so I remove them unless the litter
is premature. Then I leave them on, because I'm never very confident about
how soon the clotting factors on the new borns kick in. Some of the
breeders just didn't feel it was necessary; and felt that the dew claws are
useful to the dogs, at least in some breeds. I'm sure it is slightly
painful to the puppy, because they certainly give a little yip when you
remove it, but all of mine who have dew claws yelp when I try to get in
there and trim them too, so my feeling is.....one little yip at three days
old will save a life time of yips when I try to move that dew claw into a
good position for trimming. Yes, check the archives. The discussion was a
lengthy one. Myra
