I have no idea why and don't know anyone who would be horrified at a Fair. > Every vet that I know thinks worrying about HD in the Cavalier is silly. I know several vets who think worrying about MVD in the Cavalier is silly--however, I do not agree. > It's my belief that many (most?) Cavalier breeders in GB do not consider HD > a problem but some do x-ray. There are also Cavalier breeders in GB who do not consider MVD enough of a problem to take their Cavaliers to a cardiologist annually despite the studies showing regular vets do not do nearly as good a job as a cardiologist in correctly diagnosing MVD. Hardly anyone tested for MVD 15 years ago even though it was very prevelant then. Just because something is not considered a problem in a breed does not mean it isn't. This doesn't mean it IS, but again it also doesn't mean it isn't. Too few test Cavaliers to really know for certain it is a problem so I have a proposal. Why doesn't every breeder test each dog in their breeding program one time for HD for the next 5 years and submit ALL the results to a central collection place? After 5 years we can evaluate just how serious a problem it really is in the breed and at that point decide whether Cavaliers should be *religiously* tested for HD or not. NO ONE really knows how much of a problem it is! Many poor xrays are not sent in. Fewer than 5% of all Cavaliers are even checked for HD. Instead of arguing about it, let's go ahead and find out for sure. I, for one, would be VERY happy to find out it really isn't a problem! After what happened with MVD however, I do not trust anecdotal information--I want proof!
