Well, I must be the exception to this one as I've had some mighty strange readings on progesterone both in horses and dogs. I suspect that even the best labs do get it wrong, but sometimes nature does play a part. As I mentioned, Lee Jones (associated with Dr. Hutchison's mobile lab) told me that numbers can be skewed due to progeserone in the lining of the uterus rather than follicles. This happened in the case of one of my bitches; you are right, Laura, the pregnancy didn't take. However, I do wonder if my timing was terribly off and I didn't breed late enough.
I also have a mare that did the strangest thing on progesterone testing that any vets have ever seen. She was the subject of much conjecture. When bred, we drew a serum progesterone as she had missed prior to that. It came back WAY too low, so we raced to Tufts and grabbed Regumate and injected her with that daily for a week. We then drew another progesterone.........it was so high as to be off the charts. We didn't buy that, so we drew another.......sky high; no one had ever seen that. We took her off the Regumate of course, and then waited a while and drew another serum progesterone........again SKY high off the charts. We assayed the Regumate because there is no way it should have elevated her progesterone like that even during its one week use, nevermind afterwards. It assayed as being correct. We continued to take progesterone tests throughout this mare's pregnancy and she continued to have unnaturally elevated progesterone. We had no clue how this would effect the foal. Her milk glands swelled with major edemas.....which never did return to normal. I was really worried. She foaled normally, the foal was beautiful and fine....nursing went fine......she is now a performance and breeding mare in a breeder's barn. However, I've come to the conclusion that there is much more about reproduction that we don't know than what we do know.
