Animal Clinic Northview sends their blood to a human hospital lab for progesterone testing. If you get it in by noon, results are back by 3:30 p.m. that day. In by 5 p.m., results back by 9 a.m. the next morning. I'm not sure I've ever had to do more than 2 tests, except on problem bitches. I usually do a test around day 7 or 8, depending on how the bitch is acting and looking. In most cases it is close to 1, sometimes up to 2. If it is 1 or less, I wait 3 days to do another test, if 2 or more I wait 2 days. Just about all of them are 5 or over at the second test. I either breed the next day and 2 days later, or only 2 days later when doing just one breeding. The only bitch I've had miss in 5 or more years was one we did the chilled semen on. To be honest, we had extenuating circumstances on that one. She ovulated on Friday, but the dog couldn't be collected until Saturday morning. FedX wouldn't deliver till Monday and we couldn't get an airline to do it before. So the semen was over 48 hours old and the bitch was not inseminated on the *best* day either. Probably no surprise she didn't get pregnant. This time all went perfect, no shipment was en route more than 12 hours, she was inseminated days 1 and 3 after ovulation. No teaser bitch was used, Camelot kit used, both vaginal inseminations. She will be 21 days along by Thursday--I should know by next weekend if she is pregnant! I am crossing my fingers. I would so like for chilled to work--it seems so much easier than shipping. But if I get a lot of misses or 1 or 2 puppy litters, I will be back to shipping. Not such a good thing with the heat here in the summer and the cold in the winter. I have a bitch *stranded* at my house now because of the heat and it has happened to my own bitches several times as well. There just has to be a *best* way to do chilled--one that works most of the time for this breed. If we can figure it out, it will help many others.
