We have had three alarm systems installed in homes we have owned.  The sirens
have all been very loud, and my guess is, that the siren could definitely do
some damage to ears if left sounding for a long period of time.
The siren should be able to be placed just about any where you want it on the
outside of your home.  As far away from the dogs as possible would be good.
The alarms have an automatic shut off, required by law, I think.  Seems to me
it's 10 minutes.  Perhaps that time could be programed to be shorter.
The siren inside the home is pretty loud too, but the volume can definitely
be turned down on that one.  We have done it.
Also, if your friend is doing motion sensors, rather than, or in combination
with windows and doors, watch the placement.  II assume the salesman went
over all of that, but you never know.
