Hi, Suze - Thoughts regarding alarms........our alarm has an automatic shut-off after just a few short minutes of ringing........this is a requirement of the town we live in! Too many alarms were ringing all day (when owners weren't home!) , driving neighbors crazy with the noise.....so, now - they just ring long enough to chase any intruders away!
Also, I didn't want to have to "think" about my alarm every time I want to open a window....so, my installer suggested wiring my screens - so, I can open my windows anytime but, my house is still protected 24/7! We also are hooked into a Central Station Monitoring system......alarms don't hook to police dept.'s like they used to - ......too many false alarms! Fire alarms aren't as super-sensitive as they used to be.......I had one that used to go off when my son took a shower - the steam, whew!!!! But, we updated recently, and now I can broil a steak with no problem! (There's no fire detector in the kitchen itself! - just nearby) The best alarms have alot of different "zones" to offer maximum flexibility for what part of the house to alarm or keep off. You can also change the code as often as you want.....and have different codes for different people! Some alarms will detect when the phone line has been cut.....and will ring.... Best advice - find an alarm contractor that you like, trust and that knows his/her stuff! Good luck!
